260 km2 Niue (play /ˈnjuːeɪ/ new-ay; Niuean: Niuē) is an island nation in the
South Pacific Ocean. It is commonly known as the "Rock of Polynesia",
and inhabitants of the island call it "the Rock" for short.
Though self governing, Niue is in free association with New Zealand,
and lacks full sovereignty. All Niueans are New Zealand citizens and
Queen Elizabeth II is Niue's head of state. Most diplomatic relations
are conducted by New Zealand on Niue's behalf.
2003, Niue became the world's first "WiFi nation", in which free
wireless Internet access is provided throughout the country by The
Internet Users Society-Niue.

Reputedly the world's largest coral island, Niue is an idyllic retreat
from the modern world. Its rugged coastline, clear waters and coral
reef offer excellent fishing, diving, snorkelling and whale watching.
The first Europeans reached Niue in the wake of Captain
Cook's expedition in 1774. It became a British Protectorate in 1900,
and was annexed to New Zealand as part of the Cook Islands.
A single, 264-square-km island, Niue is one of the world's smallest
self-governing states (in free association with New Zealand).
It stands alone 560 km southeast of Samoa, 386 km east of Vava'u, and
2,400 km northeast of New Zealand.
